May offers such a meaningful opportunity to help young learners explore the world around them through culture, community, and storytelling. From the vibrant celebration of Cinco de Mayo on May 5 to the important message behind World Day for Cultural Diversity on May 21, this month invites students to appreciate traditions, understand differences, and recognize the people who make our communities strong. Even fun moments like Star Wars Day on May 4 can be woven in as a creative storytelling bridge, helping children see how stories, whether cultural or fictional, connect us all.
My resources fit beautifully into this theme.
The Cinco de Mayo Fact Booklet introduces students to traditions, celebrations, and history in an accessible way, while the Cultural Diversity Fact Booklet encourages meaningful conversations about respect, inclusion, and understanding others. The South Africa Fact Booklet provides a wonderful global perspective, allowing students to explore a country rich in culture, language, and history. Bringing it closer to home, the Firefighters Fact Booklet highlights community helpers, showing students how people contribute to safety and well-being in their everyday lives. And for a fun literacy twist, my May the 4th Be With You (Star Wars Fairy Tale) can spark imagination while reinforcing the idea that stories are a powerful way to share values and experiences across cultures.
To deepen this learning, pairing my resources with meaningful read-alouds can make a big impact. Here are five engaging book ideas that align beautifully with this theme:
All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold
The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi
Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña
Whoever You Are by Mem Fox
Firefighters A to Z by Chris L. Demarest
These stories help students see both the uniqueness and shared humanity in people around the world.
You can extend learning even further with simple, engaging classroom activities:
Cultural Connections Map – Students place stickers or drawings on a world map to represent countries they learn about (tie in South Africa and Mexico).
Community Helper Dress-Up or Drawing – Students draw or role-play as firefighters and discuss how they help others.
“All About My Culture” Page – A simple writing/drawing activity where students share traditions, foods, or family celebrations.
Storytelling Circle – Use the Star Wars fairy tale to inspire students to create and share their own imaginative stories.
Kindness & Respect Chart – As a class, brainstorm ways to show respect for different cultures and people in the school community.
As May unfolds, these activities and resources help create a classroom environment where curiosity, empathy, and appreciation grow naturally. By connecting special days with meaningful learning experiences, you’re not just teaching facts, you’re helping students build understanding, respect, and a sense of belonging in an ever-changing world!
