Sunshine and lemonade once described the simple life of a child’s summer time; no longer is this true. As in the past, children are again faced with social unrest and a pandemic crisis. Teaching children about racism was once teaching children to not see color; however, in a way, doing so diminishes the past that built each one of us. Books provide the perfect avenue to teach children of all ages exploration of differences, arise pride in our culture, and create a society of respect through honesty and acceptance. Check out the books below about germs and racism. All books are fun at any age, the following are appropriate for K-2 reading levels. Enjoy and spread the love and not the virus. Stay safe and be diligent!

Preparing Children During the Racial Crisis
Back to school is right around the corner. For others they may already be in school. Our children will be returning to school full of questions regarding the racial crisis across our country and world. While in a school setting one must be careful to not add to the children’s concerns, it is equally important to answer questions honestly to calm anxieties and instill safety.
As educators, we know children who do not have the basic needs of nourishment, shelter, and safety will not learn effectively. This might mean straying from planned conversation, or making time for private conversation when needed. It is important to use the words children will hear such as racism, hate, and hurt to explain in a context they understand. We may have a long road ahead but with positive influences our children will rise to the occasion of accepting all people as equals.
