Black History Resources

February is Black History month, but it’s important for students to learn about important figures in African American history all year long. Here are four important black leaders your students will want to learn about in your PreK-1st grade classrooms!

First, no Black History study would be complete without facts about Martin Luther King, Jr. This fact booklet will share the story of the Civil Rights leader who had a dream. Use this as a research project source, small group reading, or independent reading.

Another Civil Rights leader was Rosa Parks. Parks's story centers around the Montgomery bus boycott and is a powerful testament to women in Civil Rights. Of course, this resource is perfect for independent reading, note-taking, and research.

Former President Obama's story is one you'll want to share with your young readers. As the first black president, Obama's story is not only inspirational to share during Black History month but also year round. This fact booklet is an ideal nonfiction resource for independent reading, small groups, or for literacy stations in your classroom.

Finally, Oprah Winfrey may just seem like an entertainment icon, but she overcame adversity and is a strong role model for African American women. Use this nonfiction resource with your young readers to share a story of a modern woman during Black History month and throughout the school year.

Another courageous legend who helped other slaves to freedom was Harriet Tubman.

These Black History resources for beginning readers are perfect for all year's use. Your students will enjoy learning more about these iconic leaders in politics and entertainment!
